"Abyss"

2005

from the single "Abyss"

Credits:
Lord Bygon: vocals, synth, bass, piano, drum programming, percussions, loops, effects.

Song Story:
Godetevelo.

In a totally weird field between Pop and Jazz, and full of homages to artists like Sting and Billy Joel (but there are many more... it's up to you to find them), "Abyss" is the most absurd love song a human being could conceive. With an utterly Bygonesque chord sequence in the chorus (not just on "shining life for me"), the song features a totally unexpected Latin ending: these are the typical elements of the songs I write for myself. Dedicated to the Sweetest Pie, "Abyss" is one of the few songs in which I've written the lyrics first. Enjoy it.

Lyrics

She's just a girl, a girl from Earth
born in a day we had no worth,
she doesn't care for diamond rings
she finds her joy in hugging things

The day she grabbed my poor bleeding soul
her heart became my favourite mall
born from sea, earth, wind and fire
she brings me up, she takes me higher

And she gave birth to life and bliss,
my heart is there, in her abyss

And she gave birth to a wondrous treasure:
my days and nights, my pain and pleasure,
shining life for me

With panthers, tigers, snails and me
held tight by lovers' purity
unfurl and fold beneath the sun
she looks forward to only one

For she is known for shining bliss
my home is there in her abyss

And she gives birth to a wondrous treasure:
my days and nights, my pain and pleasure
For she gave birth to a wondrous treasure:
my days and nights, my pain and pleasure

And she's the sweetest pie
a man could ever eat
and 'til the day I die
she'll knock me off my feet (repeat)

She's such a treasure
no heart can measure
a pain, a pleasure
to me

The intro to this tune is HOT, as the kids say these days. The snapping, the bass, the strings, lovely. I wish it went on at least twice or three times as long, honestly, before the vocals come in. I have to say, I have never heard a song like this. I wouldn't know how to qualify or categorize it, even. I'm not wild about the lead singer's voice, but when you break into the "she gives birth" section, it's like, whoa, is this a new song? I like the accent too, makes it cute. I actually figured out exactly where this song belongs: a modern musical. Imagine a whole crowd of folks breaking out into the coda for this song, dancing all over the stage, ending in a huge crescendo. You owe it to your fans to make a musical out of this. Go! Now! Bret Turner, Berkeley, California

Thought it was gonna be some R&B when it started but then it all changed for the better! Sounds like some vegas singer guy.... I'd love to be in a band like this, this is what it's all about... This is on my ipod list! I really hope i can download this when I'm done. Brilliant! Martin Hadwick, Chesterfield, U.K.

Il brano "Abyss" è stupendo.. il ritornello inatteso, assurdo, meraviglioso, "Nonoso", magico: atmosfera "Aja"! Davvero complimenti! Davide Antonio Pio, Adria, Italy

This is great! I really like the melody in this and how the song isn't overwhelming with effects or anything. It's simple in its own way and yet, that's what makes it perfect. I really love this song and how original it sounds. It could easily be in a movie. Rachel Carson, Ellington, Connecticut

Nicely done! Not sure how i feel about this... I like it for sure but don't know why?! Not keen on the voice but it fits. Very original and musically clever with many twists and turns all the way keeping my interest. I really like it. Greg Perry, Brighton, UK

I dig it. That chorus really explodes in the song. Perfect transition. Love the end. I was tappen my feet. Thanks! Joe Wedge, Unknown Location, Italy

Un'ulteriore prova del tuo immenso talento, arrivato all'indicibile, all'indescrivibile. E' su questo cammino che devi andare avanti, è questo il tuo stile. The Leviathan, Unknown Location, Italy

....grande! Simpatica.. bellissimo il ritornello!!!! ingegnosa oserei dire... bravo bravo bravo!!! Sinonimo, Unknown Location, Italy

Intro to build was nicely done. From the start, you could tell that it was a tight production. Very origianal work. Vocals were pretty crisp as well, main chorus is smooth. Hard to pinpoint a specific mood, so Ill guess positive. All in all, very creative and tight. Enjoyed!! Justin Young, Redmond, Oregon

Great intro. Vocals remind me a bit of Elvis Costello. I really love the mood of the chorus - amazing. I found the arrangement of the verse a little boring after a while - maybe change it a bit. Lyrics? Hmm - not for me, but I LOVE the chorus. Not sure about the fast section - sounds like a different song. You definitely have a distinct sound. Suzanne Whitehead, Sydney, Australia

Cool intro bass with finger snapping, interesting lyrics, certainly different. Intriguing male vocals and harmonies make an original sounding song. Top marks for being out there. Excellent piano. This song has something quirky that makes it very listenable: great tune. Angela Steele, Taupo, New Zealand

I want to find an alien like that... you put a giant smile on my face! This is a fun song. Loved the background vocals: it reminds me of a song from a "Saturday Night Live" skit. I love love songs so you hooked me. Great positivity in this quirky thing. Mix, balance was ok, playing was matched well. Great last voice note against the bass. It doesn't seem like it would have broad commercial appeal, but who cares? It made me happy and I'm sure there are other positive people with a sense of humour out there, right? Great job. Roy Siegel, New York

Cool! Some originality in here. I like the weird backing insturments, and the instrumentation is great. Good melodies too, sets a good mood. I really liked this song and I like how the bridge is in a different style. Jason Perrillo, New York

Quirky and captivating from the start, with new yet old vocal sound. Quirky funny peotry. This song is a novelty for sure! Billy Falcon, Nashville, Tennessee

A catchy melody that has you humming along: you can't help but click your fingers in time with the music. A good chorus and interesting lyric made for an enjoyable 3 mins or so. The mood changes towards the end becoming more upbeat which adds to the overall song. Tom Redmond, Dublin, Ireland

With this kind of voice you won't win any grammys - so welcome to the club (I'm no Sinatra myself). But this track has something... it's funny. It has some fine lyrics and an arrangement sparkling with energy and originality. By now the production seems a bit too cheap - too homemade, you know? If you can pump up the production values a bit, this will make a very fine track (and you voice will sound much, much better). I liked the chorus/melody a lot. And what i said about the arrangement applies to the mood of the track. All the best. Markus Robert Mueller, Hamburg, Germany

Cool! I like the vocal approach, its unexpected and interesting. And then the drums kick in and the mood switches up. Then right back to verse, I really like this. It's unique. Andy Bustillos, New York City

Nice intro build, the lyrics are very original. The bassline is nice and the piano play is good. The break is really good, a great change of pace, at the 2:50 mark and the drums pick up the song. A great outro and fade. Nice song, well done! Tyrone Palmer, Park City, Illinois

Very film oriented type of music from the beginning. It sounds as though the vocalist should be in a film noir scene in black and white. This has the 40's feel from the beginning. The chorus is fun as is the verses. Good job. Toby Mor, Denver, Colorado

Nicely recorded and well constructed song... Good arrangement and clean recording. It sounds like a musical type song to me. Nice chord changes and melody in the chorus. Martin Noakes, Crawley, West Sussex, UK

Very original! Interesting intro really has be intruigued about this song. I like the snaps. The sound quality here is sort of cheesey, but it doesn't take too much away from the song. The lead vocalist's accent is a little strange sounding, but the articulation is surprisingly good, so I can understand most of the lyrics! The vocal tone and overall ability isn't very impressive, but it seems to work well within the context of this song. The progression in the verse here is very interesting -- definitely original sounding. I like that the chorus is easily identifiable from the rest of the song, but I think there are too many dramatic accents and chord changes in this song overall. It's too over-the-top for my taste -- almost like a pop/opera type thing near the end. Anthony Dini, Westwood, New Jersey

Musical theatricality! This is fascinating stuff! The plucked strings intro leads into the enigmatic vocal. Not so sure about the movie soundtrack style lush backing that kicks in with the chorus... a bit too musical-theatre for my taste. However, it has variety for that reason... lots of different moods.. I loved the little sparse piano interlude before the latin-rhythmed layered backing vocal starts at 2.30. Overall, it is an intriguing piece... good effort. My instinct? This guy could write musical theatre productions. Eynon Shaw, Cardiff, Wales, UK
